New Canaan St. Luke’s’ student Jared Soltys (‘17) never met his grandfather, Rudolph Soltys, but he had heard stories of his bravery during WWII. After some research, Jared discovered his deceased grandfather was a POW during WWII could received a posthumous Medal of Honor.
In June, Congressman Jim Himes, the Soltys family, veteran John Noonan and members of the St. Luke’s community gathered to honor Rudolph Soltys with a posthumous medal for his service. Rudolph Soltys was a WWII navigator on a B-24 bomber plane and flew missions across Europe. On his eighth mission, his plane was shot down. He was wounded, captured, and imprisoned for more than year by the Nazis in Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Silesia.
Congressman Himes presented the Medal of Honor to Jared as next of kin. The Soltys are residents of Ridgefield.
