The July 2016 issue of Highlights published a poem by now 12-year-old Mary Holtam in its Your Own Pages section. Mary, the child of Steve and Christina Holtam, is a seventh grader at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan. She enjoys diving, singing, writing and acting. Mary wants to be an actress and an author when she grows up.
Each year, Highlights readers send the magazine more than 35,000 submissions. The magazine selects work by boys and girls of all ages and from many different places in the world. Mary was one of only 23 children chosen for the July 2016 issue. By showcasing a representative sample of all the work, Highlights hopes to foster children’s creativity.
