The American Red Cross will honor New Canaan heroes Thomas Brown and Patrick Mainolfi with the Lifesaving Hero Award during the 18th Annual American Red Cross Connecticut Heroes Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 14 in Hartford.
Mainolfi is a campus monitor and Brown is a supervisory aide to the physical education department at New Canaan High School where they saved a student from choking on a bottle cap in April.
The men had received life saving skills training in previous careers with the State of Connecticut. On the day of the incident, Mainolfi spotted a teen running down the hallway in distress and heard him say, ‘I’m choking,’ according to the Red Cross.
He ran over and began to use the Heimlich maneuver. Brown saw what was happening and went over to help. He repositioned the student and began giving back blows, ultimately dislodging the item from the student’s throat.
“Patrick and Tom used their training to become heroes in New Canaan that day,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region.
“Their quick thinking and training allowed them to save a life. Their actions remind everyone of the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency. We look forward to honoring them and their efforts on September 14.”
Thomas Brown and Patrick Mainolfi, along with other local heroes, will be honored at the 18th Annual Connecticut Heroes Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Marriott Hartford Downtown, 200 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford.
Registration and lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $100 each and must be purchased in advance at http://www.redcross.org/ct/heroes.
