Emma Salvatore, a 5th grade student at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan, was cheered by 300 plus fellow students as she received an award for Best American History Essay. She was among 35 other students at Saxe Middle School who submitted essays in this year’s Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Essay Contest. The topic focused on the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the establishment by Congress in 1916 of the National Parks Service.

The DAR asked participating Students to ‘pretend you are writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 National Parks. Identify its location, discuss why and when it was established as a National  Park, and what makes This Park one of our National Treasures.’

Emma chose Everglades National Park as her topic. “Her words were so beautifully written,” said DAR’s Marge Pavlov, who presented the awards during a special ceremony at Saxe earlier this week. “If you have never been to the Florida Everglades you will want to visit; and, if you have previously visited the Everglades, you will want to return, after reading her essay.”
