For New Canaan’s Matt Russo and members of Northwestern Mutual–NYC Midtown, community service is a part of the culture, and their commitment to supporting children with cancer has been an investment made over several years. Russo and his group have helped fund direct emergency financial assistance for families who are struggling to make ends meet while caring for their sick children, helped brighten a child’s day by funding dream room makeovers to give children in treatment something to look forward to, and helped ensure that a network of volunteers are on the ground at the grassroots level ready to provide financial support, and emotional comfort.
For the second year in a row, Russo’s team is serving as the Lead Sponsor for Circle of Care, a non-profit that supports Connecticut children while they’re in treatment for cancer. For Russo and members of his team, the commitment is personal, and deep, informed by his experiences with a friend’s child who lost his battle with cancer.
Wanting to begin the year with a strong effort to help children with cancer, Russo and his firm recently held an event in Manhattan that called on nearly every member of the firm to take part in making an investment in service at some level, through a contribution or participation. The event not only raised nearly $20,000 for Circle of Care and Alex’s Lemonade Stand, but more importantly participants agreed to lend their expertise, give time throughout the year, and some even pledged to run the next Circle of Care 5K, all to raise awareness for children who are undergoing cancer treatment.
