On Friday, March 3, Friends of New Canaan Lacrosse, a nonprofit organization, is sponsoring a party and silent auction at Grace Farms in New Canaan to benefit NCHS alum and nationally celebrated lacrosse player, Graham Harden.
The evening will begin with a cocktail reception in the Commons Room where guests can mingle and bid on many special auction items, such as an African Safari, a day at the US Open in Flushing, Queens, and a once in a lifetime experience at the Masters in Augusta, GA. The cocktail reception will be followed by an exclusive screening of the film, Gleason. This award-winning documentary portrays former NFL player Steve Gleason’s battle with ALS.
In August of 2016, Harden, 48, a married father of three, volunteer fireman, first responder and gifted boys and girls high school lacrosse coach, received the heartbreaking diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS patients universally experience progressive muscle weakness that eventually robs them of the ability to walk, talk, swallow and ultimately breathe, all while leaving their minds intact. Despite the wildly successful Ice Bucket Challenge, ALS has no cure, no effective treatment and an average lifespan from diagnosis of 2-5 years. The financial challenges faced by families suffering from the disease are equally daunting. Out-of-pocket medical expenses can average $200,000-$300,000 per year as the disease progresses.
In recognition of both Harden’s contributions to the sport of lacrosse as a Connecticut Hall of Fame player and coach, as well as an affection for the more than four decades of Harden family ties to New Canaan, Friends of New Canaan Lacrosse is hosting this event and seeking the community’s help to offset the family’s financial burden. This special and unique evening is also being sponsored by JP Morgan Chase, InterSport and Grace Farms.
