FBI Director James Comey’s house in Westport could become a tourist attraction of sorts, as Hillary Clinton blames the owner for her stunning loss to Donald Trump to become the next United States president.
“See that house?” locals in the know may say to passengers as they drive by. “That guy got Trump elected president.”
According to a Reuters story on Saturday, Nov. 12, Clinton told top campaign funders that Comey’s letter to Congress before the election, saying he was planning to reinstate an investigation into her email issue, allowed Trump to go on the attack.
A subsequent letter by Comey clearing Clinton of any crimes also worked against her, she said, because it boosted Trump’s claim that the election could be rigged, rallying voters to his side.
In the magazine Politico, Navin Nayak, the head of Clinton’s opinion research division, agreed that Comey caused Clinton to lose the election.
“We believe that we lost this election in the last week,” she wrote. “Comey’s letter in the last 11 days of the election both helped depress our turnout and also drove away some of our critical support among college-educated white voters, particularly in the suburbs. We also think Comey’s second letter, which was intended to absolve Sec. Clinton, actually helped to bolster Trump’s turnout.”
Comey’s previous jobs include deputy attorney general, US attorney and general counsel at Westport’s Bridgewater Associates.
