New Canaan Library’s 9th annual literary luncheon will be Thursday, Nov. 3, from 11-2 at Woodway Country Club in Darien.
This year’s speaker and honored guest is New York Times bestselling author Paula McLain, speaking about her latest novel, Circling The Sun, a fictional account of the life of aviation pioneer Beryl Markham. Set against the magnificent landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, Circling the Sun is the imagined autobiography of pioneering English aviatrix and horse trainer Beryl Markham.
McLain, the author of the bestseller, The Paris Wife, brings to life this fearless and captivating adventurer. McLain’s tale illustrates the extraordinary life of a determined woman ahead of her time, as well as the passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, author of the classic memoir, Out of Africa.
“Paula is a fantastic storyteller and even more engaging in person,” said Ellen Crovatto, director of development at the library. “This year our guests will be transported to Africa through the incredible talents and efforts of our volunteer committee, co-chaired by Kate Burt and Pam Norton.”
“Each year the literary luncheon provides us with a special opportunity to highlight the importance of the library to the cultural fabric of our community,” noted Lisa Oldham, executive director. “This novel touches on exotic themes of horseracing, early aviation, Africa and colonialism – it’s a gem from start to finish.”
The literary luncheon is the library’s biggest annual fundraiser, welcoming over 350 guests last year for Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony Doerr. “We are excited to offer an online auction again this year, in which anyone can participate, in addition to a special prize drawing at the luncheon. Volunteers have been working hard since the spring and we can already feel the enthusiasm building in the community for this year’s event,” notd Burt and Norton.
This year the library has attracted corporate sponsorship from Tauck, Richards of Greenwich, Christine Saxe & Associates, L’Armoire and Moffly Media. For more information about becoming a corporate sponsor, contact Ellen Crovatto at ecrovatto@newcanaanlibrary.org.
The overwhelming response to previous Literary Luncheons means the event will once again be held in two rooms at Woodway Country Club, allowing many more to attend. McLain will give her formal presentation in the main ballroom. At the conclusion of the luncheon she will move to the Noroton room to sign copies of her book and conduct an intimate question and answer session with those guests.
Only 80 general tickets went on sale on Thursday, Sept. 8, on the library’s website: newcanaanlibrary.org. General tickets are $150. Although Benefactor tables have been sold out, individual Benefactor tickets are still available at $500 and $250. General tickets are for the Noroton room where McLain’s formal presentation will be viewed live on several large video screens. All ticket purchases should be made online; there will be no tickets sold at the library or at the door.
