It was a magical HANday on Saturday, Sept. 10, as ex-New Canaan Advertiser editor Joshua Fisher and Elizabeth Skalka, who met while working for Hersam-Acorn Newspapers, were married in a joyful ceremony in Redding on a gorgeous, sun-splashed day. They had both once worked for the Redding Pilot, where they met.
The petite, raven-haired bride positively glowed in a gorgeous, sleeveless dress, while Joshua, of course paling in comparison, nevertheless looked sharp in a slightly loose-fitting three-piece suit, a striking visual for most attendees who had rarely encountered him in anything but his trademark blue jeans and faded, Guthrie/Dylan-inspired work shirts.
The parents of the couple, Barry and Lynn Skalka, and Ira Joe and Shelly Fisher, beamed with pride and joy as the Rev. Tom Nissley performed the service. Ira Joe Fisher read a poem that harkened back to his own wedding long ago.
Over 130 guests were treated to a sumptuous early evening buffet featuring salmon and brisket. The open bar was always jammed, as the HAN employees in attendance proved once again that journalists and free booze literally go hand in hand.
Joshua, who most lauded for managing to significantly ‘marry up,’ clumsily guided his sweet-natured, understanding bride on the dance floor as a large Dixieland jazz band, the Blue Vipors, played a variety of slow and fast numbers.
Joshua is currently director of audience engagement at the HAN Network, after having been editor of the company’s Darien Times and New Canaan Advertiser. Elizabeth is a general assignment reporter for The Stamford Advocate.
The newly married, llama-loving couple will honeymoon in Grenada.
