Mother nature was looking out for Earth Day celebrations when morning rain gave way to afternoon sun Saturday, April 23. Saturday marked the season opening of the New Canaan Farmer’s Market on Maple Street, and the Earth Day theme incorporated ‘buy local, fix local.’
New Canaan-based computer repair company PCLinkZ.com was featured, and owner Julius Alexander said the idea is “fixing computers as opposed to throwing them away.”
“We work with Saxe Middle School to fix computers and give them away to the kids at school,” said Alexander, “We fix it [computer] for $100. If we don’t fix it, we don’t charge you.”
A small but steady crowd circulated through stands which featured a variety of ‘green’ services. According to Town of New Canaan Conservation Commission member and Earth Day coordinator Heather Lauver, this particular Earth Day was about raising awareness on environmental issues and getting people to do the simple things.
Other vendors who offered a “green” twist to their services were Aetheria Day Spa, Pryority Wellness, Starbucks, Station Eats and Halo Studios. Stands around the market incorporated healthy green ideals, such as eating locally grown food, recycling unwanted items, and using solar energy.
From Gazy Brothers Farm, director of the Farmer’s Market Lexi Gazy said, “We’re [Farmer’s Market] looking to educate people this year.”
According to Gazy, there will be a cookbook swap every week at the Farmer’s Market. Gazy said that “people can come, leave their cookbooks, take a cookbook.”
“Chef John is going to run classes on Saturdays here at 10:30 [a.m.] and 12:30 [p.m.] so people can learn how to use the wonderful veggies we sell,” Gazy said.
The New Canaan Farmer’s Market on Maple Street is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays from April until December. For more information visit NewCanaanFarmersMarket.net.
