A group of elementary and middle school students at New Canaan Country School have been learning first hand how to live a healthy life. The after school program, called Wellness Warriors, is taught by certified health coach and founder of New Canaan-based No Kidding Nutrition, Dawn Kurth. The classes are designed to teach wellness concepts beyond nutrition and include topics such as the importance of sleep, mindfulness and stress management and exercise, in addition to basic healthy eating.

“The goal of this series of workshops is to engage kids in fun activities that also teach them about the importance of health and wellbeing. This is a great age to work with because their habits are still forming,” said Kurth.

The workshop series was designed after the initial success of similar classes offered last year at New Canaan Country School by Kurth. Those classes focused primarily on cooking healthy snacks and mini-meals with students. This fall’s workshop series took the idea of wellness to a new level, adding in many more aspects that contribute to overall health.

Kathryn Kravec, director of Plus Program Before and After School Activities at New Canaan Country School, said, “Dawn brings her whole self to the program, sharing her wealth of knowledge about making healthy choices to students of all ages. Parents have reported that their children have come talking about developing a more mindful approach to daily options such as limiting sugar intake, establishing sleeping routines, and spending more time in nature as a way to reduce stress.”
