New Canaan Board of Education members recognized three of their retiring colleagues to loud applause during the governing body’s meeting Nov. 9 in New Canaan High School’s Wagner Room.

Alison Bedula and Scott Gress’ four-year terms were up and they did not seek re-election. Gene Goodman sought re-election but was not endorsed for re-election at the Republican Party Caucus in July.

Board members will swear in their newly elected counterparts — Tom Cronin, Brendan Hayes and Maria Naughton — during the board’s next meeting Nov. 16 at which time the board’s new officers will be chosen.

Bedula leaves the school board after 12 years in the legislative group. Scott Gress finishes up after two non-consecutive four-year terms. Gene Goodman, who served the previous 16 years, did not attend the final meeting because he was out in the western part of the United States with his family.

“It’s exciting and a little bittersweet,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi in an address to the departing members. “Tonight we’re saying goodbye to three longtime dedicated board members. As everyone here knows serving on the board of education can be difficult and demanding. However, each of our three departing members did so with grace, dignity and passion that made us proud to be part of the New Canaan Public Schools,” he said.

“Throughout your tenure, everyone in the school system benefitted from and appreciated your support, encouragement, thoughtful dialogue, insightful feedback and tireless commitment to helping to make our schools the very best that they could be,” Luizzi said. “Thanks to your efforts our school system is the envy of systems across the state and nation…”

“I’m really going to miss being on the Board of Education,” Gress said said during a coffee and cake reception honoring the retiring members.

Gress plans to help New Canaan’s new Waveny Conservancy raise money, and continue to be involved with the Bronx, N.Y. Kip’s Bay Boys and Girl’s Club where he has served as a trustee on its board for over 25 years. He also plans to maintain upkeep of his lawn.

Bedula thanked her husband and children for allowing her to volunteer her time on the board during her parting address. She was also grateful for the opportunity to work with the other board members.

“We have such incredibly balanced and wonderful people in this town,” Bedula said after the meeting.

She plans to become more involved in serving as a volunteer emergency medical technician in New Canaan. She is also considering other options.
