Former Connecticut Gov. John Rowland meets with a local men’s group, Feb. 8, 2019.

John G. Rowland, former governor of Connecticut, will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the New Canaan Society, a faith-based fellowship for men, on Friday, Feb. 8, in Darien.

Rowland served as Connecticut’s governor for almost 10 years before resigning from office during a federal investigation, then served 10 months in a federal prison camp. Several years later, he was convicted on campaign finance violations and spent an additional 15 months in a federal prison camp.

“Because of his journey, he brings the insight and candor of a political leader who has seen great success and has learned exceptional lessons from the challenges faced at the end of his public service career,” according to a press release from the New Canaan Society.

Elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1980 at the age of 23, Rowland rose rapidly to serve three terms in Congress before being elected the youngest governor in Connecticut history in 1994, then re-elected twice more. He was called by the Wall Street Journal “one of our nation’s rising stars.”

Years after serving 10 months in a federal prison camp, Rowland hosted “Church and State,” a radio show on WTIC-AM with Pastor Will Marotti for several years. He is involved in community, ministry services, and still lives in Connecticut with his wife Patty.

Rowland is now the development director for Prison Fellowship Ministry, covering the northeast United States.

The local New Canaan Society chapter meets in Darien at Ten Twenty Post Oyster Bar and Grill (1020 Post Road). Doors open at 6 a.m., breakfast is served from 6:30 and the meeting concludes by 8:15. The charge for the meeting (including breakfast) is $20, and all men are welcome. The local chapter serves Darien, Rowayton, New Canaan, Stamford, Greenwich, Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, Ridgefield and Danbury. A full calendar of events and scheduled guests can be found at ncsnewcanaan.org.

The New Canaan Society started in 1995 with a few men meeting on Friday mornings in a home in New Canaan. “It has grown to more than 60 chapters around the country and become a network of men joined by a common desire for a deep and abiding friendship with Jesus, and lasting and transparent friendships with each other,” according to a news release.
