The New Canaan Library will welcome back musical duo Atwater-Donnelly, performing their blend of traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance music on Saturday, June 23 at noon in Christine’s Garden, corner of Maple Street and South Avenue, adjacent to the library.

Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating and register for this program at newcanaanlibrary.org.

Elwood Donnelly and Aubrey Atwater blend harmonies and play an array of instruments including guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica and banjo.

“One of my favorite parts of our creative life is crafting shows right before the watchful eyes and ears of our audiences,” said Aubrey Atwater.

Another high point of their repertoire is a lively interpretation of freestyle Appalachian clog dancing.  Atwater – Donnelly’s performance is appealing to all ages; with humor, audience participation, and a relaxed stage presence, they explain song origins to give relevance to the material.

Give blood to waive fines

The library will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, June 22 from  9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To encourage participation the library will, on that day, waive any existing overdue fines for the presenting blood donor.

There are many reasons to donate blood — from knowing that you might need blood one day to just believing it’s the right thing to do.

The need to maintain a reliable blood supply is constant and vital; by donating you are helping to change, and perhaps save, a life.

To make a blood donation appointment please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS.

Donors must bring a positive form of ID. For a complete list of requirements and helpful tips for potential donors, visit redcrossblood.org.

The S’more you Read, the S’more You Know

The library is cooking up fun reading and activities for children this summer.

Children’s summer reading at the library begins on June 22, with the theme The S’more You Read, the S’more You Know.

In addition to encouraging a love of reading and boosting reading skills, the program keeps kids and their families going all summer with fun, challenging activities and drop in events.

Reading books and completing activities earns different badges to add to a Library Scout Lanyard.

Great prizes can also be earned by achieving reading goals, including a free book, a 30-minute jump pass to Skyzone, and a $5 gift card to the Toy Chest.

Summer Reading kicks off with Family Craft Day on Friday, June 29 in the Lamb Room.

Kids and their families or caregivers are invited to drop in from 1 to 3 p.m. and try their hand at yarn painting, collaborative weaving, paper marbling, and more.

Guest project leaders will be staff from United Methodist Preschool, and the library’s most recent Artist-in-Residence, Alissa Siegal.

The summer program wraps up with a fun celebration on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 2 to 6 p.m., featuring Mini Golf at the Library, where participants can perfect their swing and putt through the stacks.
