The founder of a weekly support group for parents whose families are suffering from drug addiction spoke recently at a Kiwanis Club of New Canaan luncheon. Paul Reinhardt, whose son died two years ago from a heroin overdose, said he was doing his “best to make sure this didn’t happen to others.”

”Research suggests that many young people who may have anxiety or other issues, are often misdiagnosed and prescribed medication, which may make their situation more acute,” he said in his remarks. “When prescription drugs are no longer working or are no longer available, many turn to cheaper, similar opiates, such as heroin.”

“New Canaan Parents Support Group, along with the New Canaan Community Foundation, is working to raise awareness of the dangers of opiate use and provide support to those suffering with the challenge of having an addicted family member,” Reinhardt continued.

The confidential group meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church, on Oenoke Ridge Road. Residents from all area towns are welcome.

In addition, there will be an inaugural New Canaan Overdose Awareness Day & Vigil Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at the New Canaan Pop-Up Park at South Avenue and Elm Street.
