A New Canaan teen is collecting bikes with his cousin for people in Africa.
Thatcher Findlay, a seventh-grader at New Canaan Country School, along with his cousin Brooke Findlay, of Sudbury, Mass., will collect used bicycles and bicycle parts on Sunday, Aug. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 708 Ponus Ridge Rd.
The collection will continue throughout the summer and fall for Bicycles for Humanity Boston (B4H-Boston). The donations will fill a shipping container and be sent to Botswana where they will be distributed by local, community-based organizations, to people who need them, said Thatcher.
The cousins, along with Whit and Reed Findlay, also of Sudbury, have organized collections in New England for four years.
The bikes provide mobility to people in the underserved community to travel greater distances in a shorter length of time and transport much more weight.
The Findlays’ next container will hold 500 bicycles and is scheduled to be shipped to Botswana in September. Bicycles collected after that date will be held for the next shipment.
“We fix the bikes and then store them until it’s time to ship,” said Thatcher.
Donors may also schedule a pickup by contacting Thatcher Findlay at b4hboston@gmail.com or 203-801-5693.
