Ambassador to address Men’s Club tomorrow

Ambassador to Canada, Thomas M. T. Niles, will address the New Canaan Men’s Club in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Church on Friday, June 16, at 10 a.m.

Niles will speak about the changing political climate and trends in Europe. Specifically he will focus on the European Union, NATO and the recent French election and the resulting ramifications on Macron’s government.

Appointed ambassador to Canada 1985-89, Niles played a key role in negotiations leading to the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, and he was widely recognized for his efforts to promote American business north of the border. As U.S. envoy to the European Union 1993-97, he was closely involved in bilateral and multilateral trade issues as well as the developing political/security relationship between the U.S. and EU.

Earlier in his career, he served in Belgrade, Moscow and the U.S. Mission to NATO and the U.S. State Department. Ambassador Niles retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 1998 after 36 years. He has since served as president of the United States Council for International Business and is currently the vice chairman. He is also a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Ambassador Niles holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. Tom Niles lives in Stamford, Conn.
