John Hetherington is set to be honored for his many years of community service as the “Fall Guy” at the 54th annual New Canaan Gridiron Club dinner and roast on Friday, April 25, at the Country Club of New Canaan. For the past 53 years, the Gridiron Club has celebrated a member of the community who has set an example of community spirit and leadership, in a musical roast of his life.

Hetherington is known to fellow New Canaanites by his signature bow tie, as well as for his service to the community.

He has been active in the Town Council, the Planning & Zoning Department, and the Zoning Board of Appeals. He has worked with the Getabout, served on the Advisory Council of Staying Put in New Canaan and was a director of United Way of New Canaan. Hetherington said he feels that service is important “because we each draw upon the stock of the community. Service to our town means sharing in and supporting the wonderful volunteerism that prevails in this community. New Canaan is graced not only by financial resources, but by remarkable human capital that can offer leadership, direction and knowledge in response to community needs.”

In 2002, he was elected to the state House of Representatives, representing New Canaan and parts of Wilton, where he served on several committees, including Appropriations, Finance, Judiciary, Transportation, Public Health, and Program Review and Investigations. He has been ranking member of the Labor and Public Employees Committee and the Government Administration and Elections Committee. As a Republican representative, he was appointed Assistant Minority Leader in 2009 and served as ranking member of the Judiciary Committee.
