Paul Sullivan, Wealth Matters columnist of The New York Times, visited Grade 1 classrooms at New Canaan Country School Friday, Dec. 2, where he led a series of young writers’ workshops. “Details are what make a boring story interesting” he advised Mrs. Faella’s students.

The children practiced creating stories, observing the transformative effect of adding adjectives, descriptive words and phrases. “My story is now more fun to read and more fun to tell!” noted Henry Irwin of New Canaan.

“First graders are naturally eager to share their ideas in writing,” said Head of Lower School Meaghan Mallin. “Through a workshop model, students learn to generate ideas and then craft their own personal narrative to share with their classmates. Mentor authors are very important as they inspire students to use similar writing techniques. We are so grateful to have talented writers such as Mr. Sullivan participate in our program.”

In addition to his column, Sullivan, a New Canaan resident, has also authored The Thin Green Line: The Money Secrets of The Super Wealthy and Clutch: Why Some People Excel Under Pressure and Others Don’t. Both his children attend New Canaan Country School, a co-ed, independent day school for students age 3 through Grade 9. Countryschool.net.
