New Canaan resident, Kathy McShane, founder of Ladies Launch Club, recently visited Costa Rica to teach English to highly vulnerable children. It was a 10-day trip, where she was totally immersed in the culture and worked with children in a daycare setting.
“This trip was life changing for me,” McShane said. “The opportunity to do meaningful volunteer work, to engage with local people, to address local needs and be immersed in the culture was more than I ever dreamed it would be. It made me realize how good we have it in this country.”
She added, “I was struck by how beautiful and smart these children were. However, it is highly unlikely that they will ever develop their talents. The children developed an immediately bond with me. I wanted to bring them all home.”
McShane stayed in a school, slept in bunk beds, ate the local food, took cold showers and washed her dishes. Every evening there were Spanish lessons. She plans to go to Thailand next year.
