AAUW (The American Association of University Women) welcomes as its guest speaker Dr. Leigh Shemitz, president of Soundwaters, on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 9:45 a.m. at Waveny House. Soundwaters was founded in 1989 with the mission to protect Long Island Sound through education and action. Since its founding, it has engaged hundreds of thousands of students and adults to build a deeper interest and literacy in science for improved school achievement and to raise awareness about the small differences we can all make to protect the health of the Sound. Soundwaters is committed to ensuring that no child or school will be excluded from their programs due to an inability to pay. They teach more than 32,000 students annually, including 9,000 from underserved communities.
Dr. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps Soundwaters fulfill its mission to educate children and adults about Long Island Sound and human impact on the environment. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in history and literature from Harvard University and a Master’s degree as well as a Ph.D. in Environmental Health from Yale.
