U.S. Congressman Jim Himes.
Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) told the Advertiser in an exclusive interview Friday, May 27, that he is stunned at the popularity of Donald Trump, and that if the Republican candidate for President prevails, it will be up to Congress to keep him in line.
Appearing at the Advertiser’s weekly public coffee meeting at the New Canaan Historical Society, Himes fielded questions about the budget and other state and local issues, before giving his opinion of Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, who likely will vie for the presidency in November.
Himes will be challenged by Redding Republican state Rep. John Shaban in November. The Advertiser asked Himes the following questions…
Your thoughts on Donald Trump?
Donald Trump says things that I would ground my daughters for four weeks for saying. And he wants to lead the greatest country in the world? I don’t trade in partisan rhetoric, but I think he’s a very, very dangerous man, and touches on some of the uglier undercurrents of American politics.
Are you surprised by his popularity?
I’m very surprised. I’ve been surprised every single day by his popularity. There appears to be nothing so outrageous, whether it’s criticizing John McCain, or calling Mexicans rapists or making fun of cripple people… there’s nothing that seems in any way, shape or form to tarnish him, and that surprises me.
In the event that he wins, do you think he’ll calm down, and surround himself with people that will be meaningful for his term?
I have no idea. I see nothing about Donald Trump that to me speaks of prudence and carefulness. What I do know is that if he wins, the role of Congress will be essential to tempering whatever intemperate instincts he has. We have a separation of powers, and in my mind that will be a moment in which it will be pretty important for Congress to step in in a big way.
What kind of president do you think Hillary Clinton would be?
I think she’s been widely celebrated for the way she’s behaved as a senator and secretary of state. Obviously this email problem has created a furor, but I’ve worked with her. I understand people like her and don’t like her, but there’s no question but that she’s a competent and prepared candidate.
