Ashley Snelwar, RN case manager at Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association (RVNA), was recently named one of the Top 10 nurses in Fairfield County by Hearst Connecticut Media Group. RVNA is a home healthcare agency based in Ridgefield that serves 28 towns in Western Connecticut. Snelwar is a resident of New Canaan, and a married mother of two children.
Snelwar, who is also a Certified Infusion Nurse, manages a caseload that ranges between 10 and 20 patients throughout the lower Fairfield County area. Her current patients range in age from 4 to 94. Many are receiving postoperative care from Snelwar, such as after an open-heart surgery or joint replacement. Others may have a chronic disease or be recuperating from an illness.
RVNA President and CEO Theresa Santoro said, “All of us here at RVNA are immensely proud of Ashley for receiving this well-deserved recognition. She is the embodiment of everything that a home healthcare nurse needs to be today. She is highly skilled with advanced technical expertise, as well as a strong listener and communicator who has a heart of gold.”
According to Snelwar, “home care nursing is just as important as working in the ICU, ER or OR.”
Snelwar says, “the best part of my job is changing patients’ behavior and mindset so that they not only understand what I’m doing, but they’re also playing a critical role in their recovery.” To do that, she spends a lot of time talking to her patients, asking them lots of questions, and encouraging them to ask her questions so that they understand their condition. “People are not computers,” Snelwar said. “They can’t be programmed with instructions. Listening to them is critical.”
