Every one of the hundreds and hundreds of cars at Caffeine & Carburetors has a story behind it.
For Norwalk’s Robert Lachman, his immaculate sky blue Citroen 2CV is from 1978, but his love of the line traces back five decades.
“When I was first married 50 years ago I was a mechanic at a Citroen dealer,” he said as his car was surrounded by admirers in the Walgreens lot on Pine Street. “I had one of these, so I kind of knew what I wanted when I started looking for a classic car about a decade ago.”
The interesting-looking French model is an original, not a restored version, which Lachman points out in a sign displayed next to the car.
“It’s got inboard brake drums, doesn’t have a distributor and the shock system and spring suspension are different than most cars,” he said. “It holds the road well because the engine has a low center of gravity.”
Lachman found in online in Florida nine years ago, flew down to check it out, bought it and had it transported up north. He has taken it to many car shows and won awards. He paid $12,000, wouldn’t sell it for less than $25,000 and feels it’s worth more than that.
Other than for shows he doesn’t drive it a lot.
“I keep it in a car bag in the winter,” he said. “Rust is a silent destroyer of antique cars.”
Asked if his wife likes it, he affirmed. “We went out to dinner in it last night.”
