An email he almost deleted thinking it was spam instead turned into one of the most dramatic ones of his life, for New Canaan’s Rick Tilghman. His dog tag lost when he was a Marine 50-some years ago was returned by a British tourist, Charles Thompson, who bought it in Vietnam, where it was sold as a souvenir.
Thompson spent a year trying to track down Tilghman, or, rather, his family, assuming that since the tag was lost that its owner likely died in the war. Tilghman would tell Thompson that he doesn’t remember losing it.
