With family and friends scattered around the world, Pritha Mitra, daughter of Pijush and Purnima Mitra, of Toronto, Canada, was married to Christopher Gregory Thomas, son of Richard and Marianne Thomas of New Canaan, twice. On Dec. 5, 2015, Tiffany Newman married them in a civil service at their home in Washington, D.C. A dinner reception followed.
Then on Jan. 2, 2016, Profulla Chakroborty married them in a traditional Bengali Hindu service at the Gateway Hotel in Kolkata, India.
The bride, 41, is a senior economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Trinity College, University of Toronto, Canada and received a Masters in Economics, also from the University of Toronto, and a doctorate in Economics from Columbia University, NY. Her father is professor emeritus in economics at the University of Calgary, Canada and her mother is a retired math professor at Mount Royal University also in Calgary.
The groom, 46, is a science writer at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD. He graduated from Occidental College and received a master’s in Biology from New York University and a doctorate in Neuroscience from Oregon Health and Science University. His mother, a certified school psychologist who retired from the Darien public schools, maintains a private practice in New Canaan. His father, a retired senior director, capital planning at Weill Cornell Medical College, NY, now heads a health care planning consultancy and teaches at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
The couple first met 16 months ago at the Hans Pedr Café, just a few blocks from their home in the District of Columbia.
