For New Canaan resident Matt Russo and members of the Northwestern Mutual Russo Financial Group in New York, the commitment to supporting children with cancer has been an investment made over several years. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, Russo and his group have helped brighten a child’s day by funding dream room makeovers to give children in treatment something to look forward to, they have helped ensure that a network of volunteers are on the ground at the grassroots level ready to provide support, and they have helped fund direct emergency financial assistance for families who are struggling to make ends meet while caring for their sick children.
As sponsors of the Circle of Care 5K in Wilton last year, they helped rally community support for kids in treatment, and as a benefactor of the stunning new exhibit that is coming to the Wilton Library in April, they help ensure that the community gets a glimpse of what the journey through treatment is really like.
For Russo and members of this team, the commitment is personal, and deep. Community service isn’t just something they practice, it’s a driving force of their culture. Wanting to begin the year with a strong effort to help children with cancer, Russo and his firm recently orchestrated an event in Manhattan that called on nearly every member of the firm to take part in making an investment in service at some level, through a contribution or participation. The event not only raised money for Circle of Care and Alex’s Lemonade Stand, two organizations that support children with cancer on a local level here in Conn., but more important participants agreed to lend their expertise, give time throughout the year, and some even pledged to run the next Circle of Care 5K, all to raise awareness for children who are undergoing cancer treatment.
“Northwestern Mutual has made a significant and meaningful impact on the children with cancer we serve,” said Liz Salguero, President and co-founder of Circle of Care. “We are so grateful to earn the support of Matt and his team, not just at this one event, but over the last several years. They truly seek to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer, and they are doing it.”
