New Canaan resident Michael De Leonardis has been appointed as a technical advisor to KEK, Japan, for the design and development of a spectrum ray analyzer for a cancer detection instrument.
The device will scrutinize the internal apparatus (organelles) of the human cell to detect the beginnings of irregular discoloration, which may indicate possible cancerous growths. The organelles of the cell provide interrelated functions for nutrition, growth and reproduction. KEK is involved with structural biology techniques that employ low level magnetic technology. The technique is non-invasive.
De Leonardis is a former NASA astronomer specializing in radiation studies for infrared emissions. He previously collaborated at Jet Propulsion Laboratories on the Infra Red Astronomical Satellite in 1981. He is a retired associate professor at Norwalk Community College.
