Interfaith service honors Martin Luther King Jr. here

A congregation of nearly 200 people were in attendance for a service sponsored by Interfaith Council of New Canaan, held at United Methodist Church in remembrance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. New Canaan High School graduate and Yale Divinity School student Jason Michael Land quoted King’s 1967 speech at Stanford University entitled, The Other America: “Time is neutral, it can be used either constructively or destructively. We must help time and realize that the time is always right to do right,” Land said.

“When I close my eyes I think of his (King’s) sermons, speeches, and Dream, boycotts, marches, sit-ins, and his voice,” Land told the gathering. “That unmistakable, undeniably anointed voice which constantly and consistently urged the whole wide world to act justly and to simply love one another.”

“He was so faithful, a great visionary and a leader,” Land said. “Dr. King was an academic and an advocate for the marginalized and disenfranchised. A real agent for social change in America.”

Following New Canaan High Land graduated from Morehouse College, the same college that Dr. King graduated from in 1948.

The service also featured performances from Serendipity Chorale; Pivot Ministries; Bruce Taylor, guitarist; Edward Pleasant, baritone.

Members of the ABC House of New Canaan (A Better Chance) and students at New Canaan High School Rajon Mitchell, Brian MacCalla and Christopher Roman also addressed the congregation.

Selectman Beth Jones addressed the congregation highlighting Dr. King’s work as an American Baptist minister, humanitarian, activist, and leader in the African-American civil rights movement.
