Today, Thursday, Aug. 15, a New Canaan resident turns 100 years old.

On Aug. 15, 1913, Thomas Socci and Antoinette (DaMario) Socci celebrated the birth of a daughter, Maria Assunta Socci, who was born on Wahackme Road in New Canaan. She was baptized in New Canaan’s first Catholic church on Forest Street. In 1918, the family moved to Italy. During the 30-day voyage by boat, Maria’s mother passed away from tuberculosis.

Maria was left in the care of a grandmother and aunt while her father returned to the United States to work as a track-layer for the New York City subway system.

At the age of 16, she married Michele Buzzeo and they were married for 62 years until Mr. Buzzeo died in 1991. They had seven children: Antoinette Lanni of Picinisco, Italy, Domenic Buzzeo of Lewiston, N.Y., Jesse Buzzeo of Brookfield, Mario Buzzeo of Lockport, N.Y., and Gino Buzzeo, Maria Bianco and John Buzzeo, all of New Canaan.

Mrs. Buzzeo has 24 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

On Sunday, Aug. 4, family and friends gathered to celebrate her upcoming 100th birthday.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Buzzeo!
