In honor of Jim Fowler’s public remembrance at the Silvermine-Fowler Reserve in New Canaan, we celebrate his life as a leading conservationist, wildlife spokesperson, host of Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom”, and Wildlife Correspondent for NBC’s Today show. We also honor Jim and his son, J. Mark Fowler, our Nature Initiative Director here at Grace Farms Foundation, for advocating for the open land that makes up Grace Farms today.
In the early 1990s, Jim and Mark helped to initiate discussions with the New Canaan Nature Center and New Canaan Audubon to preserve the land from residential development. Decades later Mark, who joined our team in 2016, was able to bring Jim and Betsey back to enjoy the immense biodiversity of our open meadows, fields, woodlands, and ponds and participate in our programs. We reminisce on Jim’s enduring impact on Grace Farms, from his talk, “Life in the Wild,” to the vibrancy he brought by supporting his son’s Nature Initiative programming. We also remain grateful for the way Betsey shares her talent for wildlife painting with children at Grace Farms.
Today, Mark and many others carry on Jim’s legacy of advocacy for preserving wildlife and the natural world. With your expansive knowledge and adventuresome spirits, we thank you, the Fowler family, for being early champions of nature and wildlife here in New Canaan.
