Panel explains what to recycle in New Canaan

A panel of experts, including New Canaan Public Works Director Tiger Mann, will shed light on the latest news on recycling, on Tuesday, April 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the library’s Adrian Lamb Room.

Panel members will include Jennifer Heaton-Jones, executive director of the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority, and a representative from City Carting to give the audience the necessary information to get recycling right.

There is confusion about recycling, including what’s acceptable, doubts about where it all goes and whether costs outweigh benefits.

Those in attendance will get the straight talk on the how and why of recycling in New Canaan. The talk will look at what can, and can’t be recycled and other questions. How does recycling get contaminated and what are the consequences to the town’s budget? Who (individual, hauler, town) is responsible for what? How does the transfer station work and where are the markets for recycled materials?

A Q&A will follow the presentation.

He will also present an overview of the turtles found in Connecticut and explain how one can become involved with the Bruce Museum citizen science project, The Connecticut Turtle Atlas.

Walsh has focused much of his career on conservation research and awareness of turtles. He has worked in the zoo/public aquarium/museum field for the past 27 years. Walsh is collections manager with the Bruce Museum and assistant director of the Florida Turtle Conservation Trust.

Audubon director: Landscaping for birds, butterflies and other critters

With sponsorship from New Canaan Land Trust and Planet New Canaan, the library presents an informative talk on how native trees, shrubs and other plants can help bring one’s yard to life.

Patrick Comins, executive director of the Connecticut Audubon Society, will give the presentation on Thursday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room.

Birds, butterflies and other wildlife can flourish in the right surroundings; adding native plants to one’s landscape design can bring a yard to life. Many of this area’s butterflies, moths and other insects have adapted to specific native plants for larval food and nectar sources.

Planting or including those native shrubs, trees and other plants lends the benefit of attracting the beneficial insects and serves to provide seeds and fruit that the birds have become accustomed to seeking out.

Native plants can make even the most suburban of neighborhoods a friendlier place for nesting and migrating birds alike.
