Two New Canaan residents were named winners in the 24th annual Silvermine School of Art’s Juried Student Exhibition on Sunday, April 13, at an opening reception and awards ceremony.
The galleries are filled with artwork in all media created by students ages 5 and up and can be viewed through Wednesday, May 21.
This year’s juror was William Jones, professor of art, painting and drawing at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Best in Show was awarded to Pam Ackley of New Canaan for her oil on linen, “Repose.” In the youth ages 5-12 category, the Best in Show award was given to Brian Campe, also from New Canaan, for his oil painting, “Van Gogh Mentor Painting.”
In the 5-12 category, first prizes were awarded to a number of students from the area, including New Canaan resident Jack Johnson in the collage category for “Mountain at Midnight.”
Kids from New Canaan earning honorable mentions were Emma Peloso for ceramics with “Indian Princess,” and Ann Pakhayev for her sculpture, “Metal Mouth.”
First prizes for the 13-17 age group included, for sculpture, Maggie Ettinger of New Canaan for “Metal Horseshoe.” An honorable mention was awarded to Jake Dobbin of New Canaan for his painting, “The Pencil.”
Residents earning first prizes in the adult category included Carrie Corcoran for “Self Portrait 60% Water,” Paul Balmer in the print making category for “Petit Palais,” and Michael Rafferty for his oil painting, “Box & Things.”
The exhibition was scheduled earlier than usual this year to coincide with the 90th anniversary fund-raiser, which will take place Saturday, May 3. The gala will honor 10 faculty members who have been teaching for 20 years or more.
