Leaders and members of the New Canaan Republican Party and their guests held their annual Lincoln-Reagan Day dinner at the Woodway Country Club on Friday, March 28. The dinner featured guest speaker Bently Elliott of New Canaan, former director of White House speechwriting for President Ronald Reagan.

Some 150 people attended the event, including a large contingent of elected officials and candidates who will be competing in federal and state races this year.

“We expect to have strong candidates campaigning on a winning message of jobs, growth and prosperity,” Republican Town Committee Chairman James McLaughlin said. “Voters are weary of seeing Connecticut’s economy continue to underperform and our competitive position decline.”

Elliott gave a close-up view of Ronald Reagan the leader, and shared memories from his White House years. He told the group that despite America’s mounting challenges, Reagan today would still be optimistic. Elliott said that Reagan would ask us “to believe in ourselves, in our infinite capacity to overcome whatever problems confront us, and he would propose policies that would empower the American people to restore the greatness of our country,” according to a release.
